Diabetes Type 2 management is now needed for children. Alaska’s young children are in danger of obesity and all the adult ills that are linked to obesity. In recent figures published today by the Alaska Health and Social Services Department (HHS), our pre-school kids are developing obesity already. The figures come from pre-schoolers through various sources.
“Although data come from different populations in Alaska, all indicate that a substantial proportion of Alaska’s young children are overweight or obese,” they say.
The data comes from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, the Childhood Understanding Behaviors Survey (CUBS), and from the Alaska Oral Health Basic Screening Survey.
WIC’s information is from height and weight measurements on infants and children who are served by their program, which is for low income families. CUBS collects statistics that are self-reported by mothers of three-year-olds. The children, all born in Alaska, and the data reported is the child’s height and weight. Alaska Oral Health Basic Screening Survey is height and weight from a sample of kindergarteners around Alaska.
WIC’s report shows that in the two to four-year-olds, 21% are obese, and 41% are obese or overweight. CUBS data has 24% of three-year-olds obese, and 41% obese or overweight. Kindergartners Oral Health study shows 16% of kindergartners obese, and 35% of them obese or overweight.
Most alarming of the dangers associated with this data are that obese children are now being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, fatty liver, sleep apnea, and musculoskeletal and psychosocial disorders. To find out what you can do about these issues, read the brochure that HHS has on their website for your use.
