Murkowki Discusses Alaskan Military with Gen. Dempsey

During his first visit in Alaska, General Martin E. Dempsey had a meeting with Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on October 26, 2011. As the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dempsey is considered the Nation’s Highest Ranking Military Officer.

At the meeting, Sen. Murkowski made it her priority to discuss about certain military issues directly related to Alaska’s defense and security needs. The discussion was done over lunch and included topics such as the necessity of support for Alaska’s military families, the fact that 10% of America’s Afghanistan presence by April is Alaska-based soldiers, a robust approach to Arctic policy, with Alaska’s waters increasingly opening up, and the need for the United States to ratify the Law of the Sea Treaty.

After sharing their conversation over lunch, General Dempsey presented Senator Murkowski with his military coin, in the form of a dog tag.

General Dempsey serves as the principal military adviser to the President, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council – by law, he is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer.

Lisa Murkowski is Alaska’s senior senator, arriving at her Senate seat in 2002. Infrastructure development, energy, health care, military and veterans’ affairs and education have all been worked on by the Senator for our state since she has been in Washington D.C.
